Figure-Ground Relationship


The shadow is the first thing that catches the eye’s attention, therefore, it is the figure. The space around the shadow is the ground.

Asymmetrical Balance


The flower is pretty and by throwing off its delicate balance it makes the photo more appealing and exciting.

Cool Colors

The blue colors of the river and sky and the green color of the trees fade as they fall further into the background.

Warm Colors

The red tones in this Macy’s window display pop compared to the simple black fabric and the white couch.

Flat Lighting

With the light above our heads and the flash from my camera it created strong highlights on our faces and minimized the shadows.

One-Point Perspective

These incredibly tall buildings of Chicago all appear to be leaning toward the same point. If the buildings were taller they would appear to touch roughly in the center of the picture.
